The Kano State Government has announced a new strategy in its fight against drug abuse, revealing that arrested individuals will now undergo vocational training to help them rebuild their lives.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this on Thursday while commissioning a modern Quick Response Squad for the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
According to a press release issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the Governor explained that the government is shifting from just punishing offenders to reforming them.
He stated that anyone apprehended will be enrolled in skill acquisition and apprenticeship programs.
The Governor noted that this initiative is designed to keep the individuals meaningfully engaged. By equipping them with practical skills, the government aims to prevent them from relapsing into drug use or returning to illicit activities.
During the event, Governor Yusuf also commended the Task Force for its rapid progress, noting that drug abuse has significantly declined in the state. He was accompanied by the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismaila Falgore, and other top officials to inspect the new facility.
