Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has launched a statewide career guidance workshop to help secondary school students make informed career choices and prepare well for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a statement issued on his behalf by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), the Governor said: “This initiative will strengthen career counselling in our schools and equip counsellors and career masters with the knowledge needed to guide our students towards suitable academic programmes and future professions.”
He said education goes beyond providing classrooms and teachers. “Our students must also understand their abilities, interests, and available career opportunities before choosing courses and tertiary institutions,” he said.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education. “We have invested in school infrastructure, teacher recruitment, scholarships, learning materials, and other interventions aimed at improving the quality of education across Kano State,” he stated.
He urged school counsellors and career masters to discharge their duties with professionalism, patience, and dedication. He also encouraged parents and guardians to guide their children rather than impose career choices on them.
The Governor stressed the importance of moral and religious guidance in schools. He called for collective efforts by teachers, parents, community leaders, and religious institutions to address drug abuse and other negative behaviours among young people.
On emerging career opportunities, he noted that technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence, were transforming the world of work. “We must prepare our students for future employment opportunities,” he said.
He urged students to study diligently, seek professional advice, and make informed decisions rather than allow peer pressure and popular opinion to determine their career paths.
Governor Yusuf subsequently declared the statewide career guidance workshop officially open. He called on education stakeholders to ensure that its benefits reach secondary school students across all 44 local government areas of Kano State.
