A court in Kano has sent Safiyanu Hamza Ungogo, a former House of Representatives aspirant for the Ungogo/Minjibir Federal Constituency, to the Gyadi-Gyadi Correctional Centre over an allegation of defamation.
The case began when the Kano State Chairman of the NDC, Husaini Isa Mai Riga, filed a complaint with the state police command, accused Ungogo of defamation of character after Ungogo publicly claimed he gave money to the party chairman.
Mai Riga denied the allegation completely. He said he never received any money from the former aspirant.
Before the matter got to court, police at the Area Command on Civic Centre Road tried to settle the dispute. Reports say Ungogo was asked to withdraw his claim, but he refused. He insisted he had no reason to take back his words.
After the police could not resolve the matter, it was taken to court. At the start of the hearing, the court ordered that Ungogo be remanded at the Gyadi-Gyadi Correctional Centre until October 19, 2026, when the trial will continue.
