Barrister Dalhatu Shehu Usman has been remanded at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre by a Kano State High Court 13, following his arraignment for alleged embezzlement and receipt forgery.
Presiding Judge, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf, ordered that the lawyer remain in custody until Friday, November 6, 2026, when the court will rule on a jurisdictional challenge raised by the defense.
The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission brought Usman before the court on charges of embezzling funds, forging fake financial receipts, and deliberately evading court processes to stall his trial.
During Monday proceedings, defense counsel Barrister A.A. Sani challenged the legal authority of the prosecution team, arguing they lacked the jurisdiction to handle the case.
In an emotional plea, Sani urged the court “in the name of God and the Prophet” to remand his client at a standard correctional facility rather than returning him to the holding cell of the Anti-Corruption agency.
He told the court that Usman had already spent more than 10 days in the commission’s custody under a prior court order.
Justice Yusuf granted the request for a change of custody, ordering that the defendant be held at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre. The case was subsequently adjourned to November 6 for a ruling on the validity of the arraignment and the jurisdictional dispute.
