Security operatives at the Kurmawa Correctional Centre in Kano have stopped an attempt to smuggle illicit substances to inmates.
The Nigerian Correctional Service NCoS, Kano State Command, confirmed that a 40 year old man, Nura Mohammed, was caught trying to toss a parcel suspected to be Indian hemp over the facility’s wall.
In a statement released on Monday, the Command spokesperson, CSC Musbahu Kofar Nassarawa, said the incident happened around 12:00 noon.
He explained that the suspect, who resides in the Janguza area, was spotted by the Armed Squad Unit commanded by CSC Usman M. Sale. The officers quickly moved in, intercepted the package, and arrested the suspect before the drugs could get to the inmates.
Following the arrest, the Controller of Corrections for Kano Command, CC Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, praised the officers for their sharp eyes and quick action. He warned that the facility has zero tolerance for contraband, urging the public to avoid smuggling illegal items into prisons.
The command confirmed that the suspect has been transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA for further questioning and legal action. It also assured that security will remain tight across all its facilities to keep the environment safe for inmates.
