NUJ Demands Justice for Kaduna Journalist Jailed Over Facebook Post

By Adamu Muhammad

The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ has demanded justice for Farida Isiak, a 23 year old journalist with Nagarta Radio who was sentenced to four years in prison or a N1.75 million fine over a Facebook post.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union described the case as a matter of serious public interest. The NUJ said the sentencing raises fundamental questions about freedom of expression, personal liberty, and the possible misuse of public authority.

While welcoming the news that Farida has been granted bail, the NUJ stressed that her release does not resolve the core issues of the case. The union pointed to the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to express opinions, personal liberty, and a fair hearing.

The NUJ made it clear that journalists are not above the law, allegations of defamation must be handled lawfully. The union warned that the legal process must never be used as a tool to intimidate journalists who criticise public officials.

To ensure justice is served, the NUJ made several demands. The union called on the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police to conduct a fair and professional investigation into the arrest of Farida and the detention of her parents.

The NUJ also demanded a fair retrial, which is scheduled for November 3, 2026. The union insisted that Farida must be given the chance to defend herself without fear or prejudice.

Furthermore, the union reminded the Nigeria Police Force to respect the rights of citizens and follow the law at all times. It also called on the government and security agencies to protect journalists and uphold fundamental human rights.

The NUJ praised the lawyers who helped secure Farida’s release but noted that justice should not depend on public attention or the ability to afford expensive lawyers.

“Protecting Farida is not just about one journalist. It is about protecting the rights of every Nigerian and making sure citizens can ask questions and seek justice without fear,” the union stated.
