The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has removed several candidates from the final lists for the 2027 governorship and State House of Assembly elections after discovering illegal nominations.
In a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission explained that it reviewed numerous complaints following the publication of the final lists on October 10, 2026.
During the review, INEC uncovered cases of wrongful inclusions. The Commission found that some candidates were published on the lists even though their names were not contained in the membership registers submitted by their political parties.
As a result, INEC approved the removal of these individuals after verifying that their names were missing from the registers. The Commission also removed candidates whose nominations were found to be inconsistent with legal requirements and those involved in alleged multiple nominations.
At the same time, INEC found merit in some complaints regarding the omission of certain candidates. Consequently, it approved the inclusion of those who were wrongfully left out.
INEC stated that the updated lists, reflecting these removals and inclusions, will be published on its website. The Commission reassured the public of its commitment to transparency and a credible electoral process.
