Former Kano State Governor and NDC vice presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has issued a strong warning against the use of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence AI, to manipulate Nigeria’s electoral system.
Kwankwaso gave the warning while reacting to reports of suspected AI-generated photographs found in the preliminary voter register published by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
He described the development as deeply concerning, it raises serious red flags about the integrity of the country democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
”Our democracy cannot afford any compromise in the integrity of the voter register. Every eligible Nigerian must have the right to vote, and every vote must count,” Kwankwaso stated. “Equally, nobody should be allowed to exploit technology, including artificial intelligence, to undermine our electoral system.”
To prevent this technological threat, he demanded a comprehensive and independent audit of the voter register.
He urged INEC to carefully verify questionable entries and remove fake identities without disenfranchising legitimate voters.
He insisted that INEC must provide clear answers on how the suspicious images entered the system and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.
